Health and Safety Policy for Sydenham Removals
Sydenham Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by our activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with removals and related services, including packing, loading, transportation, unloading, and storage.
We aim to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing effective control measures. Health and safety considerations are integrated into all aspects of our planning and day-to-day operations.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Sydenham Removals accepts overall responsibility for health and safety within the company. Managers are responsible for ensuring that safe systems of work are in place, that staff receive appropriate training, and that suitable equipment and vehicles are provided and maintained in a safe condition.
Management will regularly review this policy and associated procedures to ensure they remain effective and reflect current legal requirements and industry best practice for the removals sector. Any significant changes to our operations or risk profile will trigger an additional review.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Sydenham Removals has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions at work. Staff must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, and report any defects, hazards, or incidents to their manager as soon as practicable.
Employees are expected to co-operate with the company in implementing this Health and Safety Policy, attend relevant training, and wear any personal protective equipment provided for specific tasks, such as manual handling or work on customer premises with particular risks.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Sydenham Removals will carry out risk assessments for key activities such as lifting and carrying items, operating removal vehicles, navigating stairs and narrow access routes, working at height where required, and handling fragile or heavy goods. These risk assessments will identify potential hazards and set out control measures to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
Safe working methods and guidance will be developed from these assessments, and employees will be briefed on the procedures that apply to their work. For each removal job, the team leader will consider the specific site conditions and adapt working methods where necessary to maintain safety for staff and customers.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a core element of our removals service and presents a significant risk of injury if not managed carefully. Sydenham Removals will provide manual handling training for relevant staff, including techniques for lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads, and team lifting for larger or awkward items.
Where possible, mechanical aids such as trolleys, dollies, or lifting straps will be used to reduce physical strain. Employees must not attempt to lift or move items that are beyond their capability and should always seek assistance when required. Particular care will be taken when handling pianos, large furniture, appliances, and other heavy or bulky items.
Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety
Our vehicles will be maintained and inspected in line with manufacturer guidance and applicable regulations. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, be competent to operate the vehicle, and comply with road safety laws at all times.
Loads will be packed and secured safely within the vehicle to prevent movement during transport. Drivers are responsible for checking that doors are secure, ramps and lifts are stowed correctly, and access points are clear before moving off. Journey planning will allow for realistic travel times and suitable rest periods.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
When working at customer homes or business premises, Sydenham Removals staff will take all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of occupants and visitors. Access routes will be kept as clear as practicable and, where appropriate, warning signs, cones, or barriers will be used to alert people to moving items or vehicle operations.
Floors and stairs will be checked for hazards such as loose coverings or wet surfaces, and any concerns will be raised with the customer before work proceeds. Care will be taken to avoid damage to property, fixtures, and fittings, and to prevent tripping or falling hazards caused by equipment or packing materials.
Training, Information and Supervision
Sydenham Removals will provide appropriate health and safety training, information, and instruction to all employees relevant to their role. This may include induction training, manual handling, vehicle safety, use of lifting equipment, and site-specific briefings.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring working practices, ensuring that staff follow safety procedures, and offering guidance where necessary. Additional training or refresher sessions will be arranged when new equipment is introduced or if changes occur in working methods.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Miss Reporting
All accidents, incidents, and near misses, whether involving employees, customers, or third parties, must be reported promptly to management. Details will be recorded and investigated so that causes can be identified and measures put in place to prevent recurrence.
Where required by law, certain incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities. Lessons learned from investigations will be shared with staff and, where appropriate, incorporated into updated risk assessments, procedures, or training.
Welfare, Health and Wellbeing
Sydenham Removals recognises that the physical nature of removals work can be demanding. We will take reasonable steps to protect the health and wellbeing of our employees, including providing opportunities for rest breaks, encouraging safe working techniques, and discouraging unsafe practices such as rushing, overloading, or taking unnecessary risks.
Employees are encouraged to raise any concerns about their health, fitness for work, or workplace conditions with management so that support or adjustments can be considered.
Policy Review and Commitment
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and amended as necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, or the nature of our services. Sydenham Removals is committed to continually improving health and safety performance and expects all employees to support the implementation of this policy in their daily work.
By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, we aim to deliver professional removals services while protecting the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved.
